Regarding Rats in Leeds

Without counting the tail, the Brown Rat weighs about 500 kg and reaches roughly 23 centimetres in length. It features a short tail, a blunt nose, small hair-covered ears, and a shorter muzzle than its total length.

The Brown Rat prefers to stay close to the ground, burrowing underground to build a nest under sheds, patios, earth banks, and waste dump.

Rats breed all year, and a female rat can have up to five litters every year, producing 5-8 young. The babies are born blind, helpless, and naked, and they must rely on their mothers for sustenance for around three weeks until they are ready to eat solid food.

Rats' incisor teeth continue to grow throughout their lives, which explains their gnawing behaviours to keep them down. Woodwork, plumbing, and electric lines are all damaged by rats' nibbling.

A rat eats about 50 grams of food every day and will save the rest for later. Rats are nocturnal feeders who dwell where they can find food, water, and shelter.

Rats are a creature of habit, and they make frequent "runs" to and from food sources. They can produce up to 40 droppings every day, all of which are concentrated in one location (12mm and tapered at both ends).

(Mice can produce up to 80 droppings each day, which is distributed randomly and resemble an apple pip in size and colour.)

A rat's typical lifespan is one year, however, it might be longer or shorter depending on its surroundings and food supply.
