Bed Bug Treatment

Get rid of bed bugs with Apex Pest Control.

Bedbug treatments must be done fast and effectively. Although it might be small insects, bed bugs are not healthy, unwanted, or healthy when infested, and can sometimes cause serious health problems.

The unpleasant creatures lurk throughout your home, but typically, you will find bed bugs on beds and bed frames, mattresses and furniture, as well as in and between items of clutter.

If you have travelled, you may bring bed bugs back home with you in a suitcase, picked up from a hotel room. They are often found even in used furniture. Or, they could be unwanted guests who find their way into your house and are making their own home.

Bed bugs are fairly common, but they are notoriously difficult to eliminate on your own. People often assume that a little alcohol spray or a thorough cleaning will get the job done, however, bugs are generally resistant to pesticides. What is more, because they are small, it is easy to think that you have eliminated all of them, when really, they are hanging around in crevices and cracks.

Calling pest control experts, such as Apex Pest Control here in Yorkshire, is vital. Our services involve using sprays and heat treatments which target the infestation items or trouble spots in order to eradicate the bedbugs in your home.

What is a bed bug?

Bed bugs are tiny insects about the size of an apple seed. They are red, brown, or a darker yellow, oval-shaped, and fairly flat. Adult bed bugs are typically about 5mm long.

They live for weeks, sometimes months, feeding on the blood of animals and humans, and may be found throughout your home. In their brief lives, they usually lay 400 to 500 eggs: an alarming amount, meaning that the spread of bedbugs is fast, and that treating them is crucial. They feed overnight, so if you are waking up in the morning to small bite marks and itchy skin, it is likely that you have an infestation.

Bed bugs are named after where you are likely to find them the most: in your bed. Though, you may be surprised to know that, really, bed bugs inhabit an array of hidden spots throughout your house. You will find them on mattresses, bed frames, and furniture, and they are also buried in clothes and clutter in every room in your house.

You may even find that they are cozying up behind picture frames, on sagging wallpaper, or in crevices and cracks, such as the seams of furniture and mattresses, or the springs of mattresses.

Unfortunately, there is no place where they won't hide, and once they are there, they are hard to remove from your home without a professional pest control service.

Bed bugs are insects in the Cimex genus that feed on human blood, typically at night. Their bites can cause several health effects, including skin rashes, psychological effects, and allergic symptoms. Bedbug bites can cause changes in the skin that can range from small areas of redness to large blisters.

How can I tell if I have a bed bug problem?

You may initially be unaware of the presence of a bedbug problem in your home. However, there are a few signs that you can watch out for in your home. First, check your clothes, mattresses, and bedding for stains of blood.

These are little spots that occur after an insect has been crushed, usually while you are sleeping at night (so you might see spots on your bedding). Of course, blood can also be the result of crushing, too.

Secondly, look out for excrement from bed bugs. Again, these are small marks, but it is a deep brown. You can tell these because they bleed slightly when you pass it over the material like the markers would.

Another way you can identify bed bugs is by their eggs. Bedbug eggs and shells are just around 1mm in size initially, but they get larger. Their pale yellow colour makes it easy to recognise eggs.

Why is Bed Bug Infestation A Problem?

Infested areas are more than a nuisance, they are not pleasant to think about--they can actually harm your health. At most, bedbug bites are annoying. Red, itchy marks may develop on your skin, often on the face or neck, or in areas that were not covered by your clothes when you were sleeping.

You may notice that they appear in a cluster, which is when bed bugs use you for a blood meal while you are sleeping. This definitely does not look good, and visible signs of an infestation are not what you will want to be showing off.

For some, these marks are extremely itchy, causing a painful swell. This may need treatment, and your pharmacist may recommend creams. Some people might also need to visit a GP, if the swelling is especially severe. Although it is uncommon, having a large infestation of bedbugs in the house can lead to anaemia.

Bed bugs also attack household animals, ranging from cats and dogs to chickens. It can be incredibly annoying, and a bite is extremely uncomfortable for your pets, sometimes leading to them suffering, which will require medical care as well.

Which treatments instantly kill bed bugs?

Treating bed bugs is tough. (There’s no such thing as an effective homemade bed bug spray.) You must be certain that you have completely removed the bed bugs from all of their places of residence within the contaminated room. If you don't, the adults will keep multiplying and using you as a blood meal every night -- certainly not a nice thought.

Alcohol spray is a common method of home treatment. However, bed bugs are usually resistant to unprofessional spraying methods.

Many believe that home-based heat treatments -- placing clothing, mattress covers, or beds in the washing machine at high temperatures -- will work. Others think that a thorough cleaning and getting the vacuum out will clear out infested areas and drive insects away from the room.

Of course, those are good practises. A clean, dusted, and clutter-free house helps keep bugs at bay, and allows you to detect an infestation sooner, but they are not an effective cure. And since bed bugs usually live inside your mattress and box springs, scrubbing dust off them and running hot washes through your machine definitely won’t eliminate all of them.

More importantly, home-made alcohol sprays and store-bought insecticides, even though they claim they are non-toxic, aren't things you want sprayed on your mattress, your bed frame, and your soft furnishings, particularly inside.

How does Apex Pest Control get rid of bed bugs?

Bed Bug infestation needs to be addressed in an in-depth manner with proper treatments. We begin by conducting a thorough survey of your rooms, as well as anywhere else where the bed bugs can usually be hidden. We inspect your bed, mattress, and box spring, the mattress seams, the bed frame, the furniture, and any cracks or crevices -- every possible place bed bugs might hide.

Of course, we also check your mattress and furniture for blood, or for any adult bed bugs hiding eggs. Bed bugs definitely find all sorts of trouble spots to hide out in, so carefully inspecting your rooms is crucial for getting rid of bed bugs.

Once we identify the problem areas, our bed bug treatments always include the application of an appropriate, long-lasting residual insecticide on all surfaces. To accomplish this, we use flat fans and crevice sprayers on all bedrooms, including the beds frames, as well as in other rooms where we suspect the bed bugs are hiding and are likely to be biting.

We follow that up by using Ultra Low Volume (ULV) room spray to get a fast, zapping effect. In this way, we are approaching the treatment with both long-term residuals and rapid-action techniques to eliminate the bed bugs.

What Bed Bug Killer Treatments Will Apex Pest Control Use?

There are several steps to the Bed Bug Removal that we use to treat every part of your home that may have bugs. Insecticide treatments completed thorough and properly by an experienced pest control professional are the best way to eliminate bed bugs.

Up to three different types of insecticides can be used to get the best results, and our experienced pest management teams will pick one that is ideal for your infestation and your surroundings.

There are three main types of bed bug insecticide, which are all far superior to homemade bed bug alcohol sprays:

  • A quick-acting, contact insecticide that is used on surfaces that people frequently touch, like furniture and bed frames.
  • A residual insecticide used within furniture, such as the seams in mattresses, and on the bottoms of surfaces that we touch.
  • A powder-based insecticide used in cracks and openings, such as electric outlets and skirting boards.

Other methods of controlling bed bugs, such as heat treatments, steam applications, or freezing, can be effective. Items that are treated with heat treatments also will not require spraying with insecticides.

Before a bedbug control technician comes in, you'll get instructions on what to do and how to prepare the room. Make sure to follow them closely.

An insecticide treatment usually takes about 30 minutes to 2 hours per room, depending on the size of the room, number of bugs, conditions, and contents of the room. Once you are finished with the treatment, you should wait for any insecticides to dry out before entering your room again, or until a pest control professional says it is safe to enter again.
